01 — Founder Perspective
Draft — pending founder approval
We knew what Foliages was meant to be. What we did not have was the one thing the whole model depends on — a place where somebody could actually buy.
First500days built the platform and put us live inside a month. No long discovery, no drawn-out phases. We went from an idea to a working shop.
The business has been running on it since.
02 — Executive Summary
Foliages is a Mysuru-based garden brand with a straightforward proposition: bring the country's nurseries into one place so buyers can compare prices and stop overpaying for house plants, and sell the pots, accessories and landscaping services that go with them.
When First500days was engaged, that proposition existed and the storefront did not. For a business whose entire premise is comparison and purchase, that is not a missing feature — it is the missing business.
The engagement was deliberately narrow: product only, one month. First500days developed the e-commerce platform and took Foliages live.
Foliages has been running and trading on it since.
03 — The Venture
Buying plants in India is an opaque business. Prices for the same variety swing widely between nurseries, quality is impossible to judge from a distance, and a buyer who wants a specific philodendron has no way to see who has it and at what price without ringing round.
Foliages positions itself directly against that: compare and buy from the best nurseries in India. Around the plants sit the things people buy in the same trip — pots, pebbles, lawn edging, garden accessories — and, at the other end of the scale, landscaping services.
It is a straightforward commerce model, and it has one hard dependency. Comparison requires a catalogue, a catalogue requires a storefront, and purchase requires a checkout. Without those, the proposition cannot be demonstrated at all.
Everything the proposition promises happens inside the platform. That is why it was the whole engagement.
04 — Where They Started
Most case studies on this site open with a long list of what was missing. This one does not, and that is the point: Foliages knew its business. It simply had no way to run it.
A single missing asset is easy to underrate. For a comparison-and-purchase business it is total: no catalogue means nothing to compare, and no checkout means nothing to buy. Until the platform existed, Foliages was a good idea that could not transact.
05 — The Challenge & Our Response
The narrowest engagement in this portfolio, and a useful demonstration of what a scoped brief looks like when the client already knows their own business.
There was no digital platform to sell through. The model, the supply relationships and the intent were in place; the shop was not, so none of it could be tested against a real buyer.
We developed the e-commerce platform and took the business live: a browsable catalogue organised by variety and by type, product listings with pricing and availability, cart and checkout — the full path from landing on the site to placing an order.
On scope: this engagement covered product only. Strategy, branding, go-to-market and team were not part of it, and nothing on this page claims otherwise. Foliages arrived knowing what it was building and why — what it needed was execution, delivered quickly.
06 — What We Built
Products organised two ways — shop by variety and shop by type — so a buyer can arrive knowing the plant or knowing only the category.
Availability and price filters, sorting, discount badges and MRP comparison — the machinery the "stop overpaying" promise actually rests on.
Quantity control, recommendations, an order note for preferred courier, shipping and tax handling at checkout.
A WhatsApp channel on every page, because plant buyers ask questions about care and size before they commit.
07 — Business Outcomes
Foliages went from having no way to sell to running a business on the platform, inside a single month. The venture is trading.
No order volumes, revenue figures or customer numbers are claimed on this page. The engagement delivered the platform; what the business has done with it since is Foliages' achievement, not ours to report.
08 — Before → After
09 — The Lesson
Foliages is the shortest engagement in this portfolio — one month, one deliverable — and it is on this site precisely for that reason.
Foliages did not ask for a strategy review or a brand exercise. It knew its model and named the single thing standing between it and trading. A client who can scope their own problem gets a faster, cheaper answer.
A single gap in a list looks minor. When the missing piece is the one every part of the model runs through, the business does not partially work — it does not work at all.
Not every venture needs a twelve-month engagement. Some need four weeks and a team that starts on day one rather than after a discovery phase.
The right engagement is the size of the problem, not the size of the ambition behind it.
